What is kalavantin durg fortress?

Kalavantin Durg is a historic fortress situated in the Western Ghats mountain range near the city of Panvel in Maharashtra, India. It is also known as the ‘stairway to heaven’ because it is one of the most challenging and thrilling treks in Maharashtra.

The fortress was built during the 17th century by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan's general, Bahadur Khan, to watch over the trade route between Mumbai and Pune. The fort stands at an elevation of 2,300 feet above sea level and is known for its steep rock-cut steps that lead to the top.

There are around 2,250 steps to climb to reach the summit, making it a challenging trek for even experienced trekkers. The trek starts from base village Thakurwadi which is further connected by roadways from Panvel City. The trek is undertaken by adventure-loving tourists and trekkers, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding Sahyadri mountain range.

The fort offers panoramic views of the Prabalgad and Matheran mountain ranges and the beautiful landscapes of the Western Ghats. The fort walls, bastions, and steps are made of solid rock stones, which testifies to the skill of the ancient architects and builders.

The trekking experience to this fort is truly adventurous and unforgettable. Tourists usually visit this place during the monsoon season when the beauty of the lush green forests is at its peak and the waterfalls cascade down the rocks. However, due to the steepness and danger associated with the trek, it is advisable to take precautions and be well-equipped before embarking on this adventure.
